Guitar Ensemble

2019 - 2022

Picking up the guitar at the age of 13, I've always performed songs alone. To challenge myself, I decided to step away from acoustic guitar to classical guitar, joining the ensemble that focuses on bonds and synchronisation.

As a graduating student, I had to step down from my roles of being Ngee Ann Polytechnic's Guitar Ensemble's Main Committee. As such, I created a guideline for the next librarian and treasurer, hoping that it would aid her in her journey as a leader.

2021

This is my first performance online, and my last performance before graduation. To be able to participate as a performer, I juggled between the club's practice sessions and my internship.

In addition to my role as a performer, I took on other tasks in order for the online performance to proceed.

Referencing my past experiences in filming for art fiestas, I guided the Polytechnic Stage Production
to assist in recording the performance. Additionally, I designed a logo in order to provide the club a branding, and led the creation of floral bracelets for performers to wear during the recording.

As a third year student, I applied for the librarian and treasurer position in the club's main committee.

After initiating a workshop and being heavily involved in performances, I was eager to contribute more towards the club. However, I realised that my impact will be limited if I remained a regular member. Hence, I took on the responsibilities of being a committee member despite the tough times.

Aside from performing my duties—such as keeping track of music scores and budgeting—  I actively offered to help in the club's planning and documentation.

2020

After the NP AF 2020, I initiated an acoustic guitar workshop alongside my clubmate. This idea emerged as I overheard the juniors' wants to learn the acoustic style in addition to the club's classical style. Concurrently, the workshop was set up in hopes of being a welcome break from both the usual training, and the pandemic's situation.

Of course, the workshop was not set up on a whim. To ensure the best experience, I created a survey form to gauge the members' interest level, skill level, and favourite song genres.

After that, a 5-session-long plan was created. The participants were separated into 2 groups based on their skill level, and taught of their favourite genres.

My clubmate and I acted as the instructors, swapping groups every now and then to teach the participants topics we are skilled in.

While the workshop was created with the juniors in mind, seniors and alumni also joined in during their free time. The workshop was a success, with all the participants grasping the basics of acoustic fingerstyle.  Many requested for more in the future.

In 2020, there was the COVID-19 outbreak. As such, the school had to suspend many clubs and societies from their usual training. After discussions with the Student Development Office, we managed to keep one tradition of our club: The Arts Fiesta. However, it would be held online.

Due to the pandemic, the first year members that had just joined the club barely had chances to meet one another. As such, the club came to a consensus that the fiesta's performing roles would be given to them in order to build experience.

As a senior member in the Alto 2 section (playing the main and sub-melody of a song), I took some juniors under my section, ranging from beginners to experts in guitar playing. At practice sessions, I instructed them and provided tips for improvements when possible.

I was involved in the production of the online performance. Aside from acting as an assistant instructor for the performers, I acted as the camerawomen and liaised with Ngee Ann Polytechnic's Poly Stage Production crew. The edited videos were then uploaded onto the club's YouTube channel.

While it is regretful that this fiesta did not have as elaborate planning and exposure as previous years, I was glad it could be held, as it is an important event for the juniors and the graduating batch.

2019

2019

My first performance in the club is the NP Arts Fiesta 2019. For the fiesta, the ensemble had to master 7 songs in a short period. The performers trained relentlessly under the conductor's guidance. We even held a 2-day training camp in order to showcase a good performance to the audience.

Through the guitar ensemble, I gained  the ability to follow complex and abrupt instructions accurately. Not only was my resilience increased due to rigorous training camps, I also bettered my teamwork with the ensemble's members.

Song list:

  • Senorita - Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello

  • GOGOBEBE - MAMAMOO

  • On My Way - Alan Walker

  • 那些你很冒险的梦 (Those Were The Days) - JJ Lin

  • Fly Me To The Moon - Frank Sinatra

  • FANCY - TWICE

  • Boy With Luv - BTS ft. Halsey

Most of all, I was able to overcome stage-fright and comfort others who are anxious. In addition, I also understood to learn and move on quickly from mistakes in order to give a better performance.
