New Life Stories
Supporting children with incarcerated parents.
Through the module of Project & Volunteer Management, my team of 5 collaborated with New Life Stories to raise awareness on children with incarcerated parents, and encourage donations to aid the children in their education. To reach our goals, we planned and executed a roadshow at the Woodlands National Library.
During the preparation stage, we brainstormed activities and maintenance mechanisms that would appeal to preschool and primary school children. This proved to be challenging, as the topic we are addressing—that not all children share the same starting line in life—is a sensitive and abstract one.
We settled on something akin to a board game, named “Choose your own adventure” game. To start the game, the children will have to pick a random keychain from a pouch, which also functions as the mechanism. There are 4 keychain designs, each representing characters with different backgrounds varying from poor to rich, and loving to distant families.
Throughout the game, the children will realise the impacts that the characters’ background and families have on them, emphasising limitations and unfairness faced by those with incarcerated parents. Through this, we then teach them to be kinder, and more willing to share with their peers.

Both the game board and the keychains were handmade by the group members. For me, I contributed by designing the characters and posters promoting the event.
At the end of the roadshow, more than 100 children walked away with their respectful keychains. Some parents even expressed interest in donating to New Life Stories. For me, I learned to manage the logistics required for roadshows, improved my interpersonal skills, and honed my resilience in this tiring but satisfying project.
